Charcoal briquettes that hold their heat

Briquettes are carbonised material pressed into a uniform shape, so they burn evenly and for longer than lumpwood. We make three, for different jobs:

  • HazelHex: our flagship. Carbonised hazelnut shells and a potato-starch binder, pressed into hollow hexagons. 6–8 hours on a single load, up to 1100°C, very low smoke.
  • Hex: Sumi Binchotan-style briquettes from recycled hardwood sawdust. 5–6 hours, up to 1000°C.
  • Birch briquettes: compressed silver birch, a steady 3–5 hour burn at a lower price.

Light briquettes together with lumpwood in the grill. The briquettes give you duration, and the lumpwood gives you heat and flavour.

Can I use briquettes in a kamado?

Kamado makers warn against briquettes with additives, which can taint the ceramic. HazelHex is made only from hazelnut shells and a potato-starch binder. See our kamado charcoal guide.
